15 Things To Do After Buying A New Laptop (Like Pros)

There is always excitement while unboxing your new laptop, but there are few things you need to first do to ensure that your device runs smoothly down the road. So, in this article, I am going to tell you about things to do immediately after buying a new laptop so that you can configure and ensure the safety of your new device. So, let’s get started.

Things To Do After Buying A New Laptop

1. Record The Unboxing Video

Most laptop sellers online would want you to prove that the product delivered to you was already damaged or had some accessories missing and not done by you. And the only way to prove that is by recording an unboxing video.

With a video as proof, you can claim a refund or replacement of your product. Most users don’t record the unboxing video and they are left with no proof of the damage which happened during the transit. Don’t make this mistake!

2. Check Physical Condition Of The Laptop

There are a few things you need to check physically before booting it up. Check the hinges and see if it’s very tight or loose. Check the charger for any damage. Check for any scratches on the screen, which are very common these days. Turn your laptop around and check under it for any cracks or loose screws. If you find any, don’t hesitate to claim a replacement.

3. Setup The Windows

Setting up windows

If connected to the internet, Windows will automatically start downloading the windows updates in the background and it’ll just take much more time to set up. So, better not to connect it and proceed on the steps, and later you can update it if you want. You will be asked to choose language, name, email (Don’t use your Microsoft account here since you are not connected to the internet).

Next set up your lock pin, and then you’ll be prompted to the privacy page. Now here comes the tricky part. By default, everything here will be turned on, which is not something we want. Just unselect everything before clicking on “Accept”. It’ll ask you to set up Your Phone, One Drive, Office 360, and Cortana. You can just ignore these and proceed.

4. Create Restore Points For Your Drivers

Next, we have to create restore points for all the drivers. Why this is necessary is because the drivers that come with the PC are the most appropriate ones. So, if any driver-related problem arises in the future, you will always have a backup of your default drivers which you can always come back to.

Some brands offer driver files within the hard drive itself, so it’ll be better to check your internal drive for any folder named “Drivers”. You can create a zip file that can upload in any cloud storage, like Google Drive for a backup. But if you don’t have that, let’s see how you can create restore points manually for the drivers.

How To Create Restore Points In Windows

Follow the below steps to create a restore point.

1. Open the file manager of Windows, right-click on empty space and click on properties.

2. Now the Control Panel will be opened. From the left menu, click on “Advanced system settings”.

System Properties Advance

3. From the popup window, go to the “System Protection” tab and click on “Create”.

4. Now choose a name for the restore point. Choose something like ‘Default Driver’ so that it will be easy to identify.

5. It will start the process of creating restore points, which may take a few seconds and it will be done.

Now if in the future you ever come across driver-related issues, you will have a backup of the working drivers.

How To Restore Drivers From Restore Points

To restore, you can follow the following steps.

1. Open the file manager of Windows, right-click on empty space and click on properties.

2. Now the Control Panel will be opened. From the left menu, click on “Advanced system settings”.

3. From the popup window, go to the “System Protection” tab and click on “Restore”

4. Click on “Next”, choose your restore point, and again click on next.

5. It will begin restoring to the old drivers which can take up to a few seconds.

5. Update Windows And Drivers

Most of the time new updates will be there which your new laptop won’t have. So now we are going to update the Windows and also the security patches. So follow the below-mentioned steps.

check for windows update

1.  Go to the Settings App in your Windows.

2. Click on the “Update & Security” icon, which will be the last one.

3. Now in the Windows Update section, click on the “Check For Updates” button.

4. Your PC will automatically start checking for new compatible updates.

5. It will automatically start downloading and installing the new updates.

Note: You may have to restart your PC multiple times for updates, so make sure your PC is connected to a constant power source.

Driver For Brand Specific Peripherals

Most often the Windows Updates include drivers as well. But in some cases, you will have to manually update drivers as well. So, type your laptop’s brand name & “Driver update” on the google search bar and you will get the specific driver updater application on the official website itself.

Lenovo driver tool download page

For example, if you own a Lenovo laptop, search “Lenovo Driver Update”. Download, install and run this application and you will be able to install the brand-specific drivers. This will fix any issues regarding the keyboard, touchpad, etc.

Drivers For Processor And Graphics Card

For the processors, you will have to download specific software, depending upon your processor brand. If you own an Intel processor, follow this link to download and install the Intel Driver Assistant. This will install all the processor-related drivers on your PC, install them in the background, and then you will have to restart your PC once. After that, you can remove this software as well.

If you own an AMD processor, then you can follow this link for the AMD software for this as well which will install the latest drivers for both Ryzen Processor and AMD Graphics Card. This is quite easy to use since AMD is the manufacturer of both processors and graphics cards, so you can install drivers for both in one software.

But if you have an Nvidia graphics card on your laptop then you can follow this link which will take you to the Nvidia Drivers section. There is no driver assistant software for Nvidia as such. You have to manually enter your Nvidia graphics card details and it will list the specific driver you need. You just have to download the file and run the setup application to install the latest drives.

6. Check Battery Health

Chances are very slim for you to receive a laptop with a damaged battery. But still, I will recommend you to check and claim for a replacement immodestly. We will be using an application called BatteryInfoView. Here are the steps you can follow.

  1. Download the BatteryInfoView zip file.
  2. Extract it using WinRAR, 7zip or any other tool.
  3. Look for the the .exe files inside it and run it.
  4. Now you will be able to see the battery health on a new window.

If the laptop is new then you must be having somewhere around 90-100% battery health. If you see anything below this it is advisable to claim for a replacement.

7. Match Specifications

You must check if your laptop has the same specification as mentioned in the box, or something modified. So, for this, simply open the task manager (Search it in the Windows Search) and click on the Performance tab.

Taskmanager performance tab CPU

Here, you can select CPU, Memory, GPU, etc, and see the information on the right side of the task manager window. Make sure all the details match as was written on the box.

8. Check All Components

You need to check if all your PC components are working properly. We will be taking the help of an online site called Online Mic Test. Regardless of its name, you can check your microphone, webcam, sound, keyboard, mouse, etc. Simply open the site, select the component you want to test, and click on start. It will ask for permissions, allow it and it will start the testing.

If there’s any problem with anything, you would be able to see it on the screen. It is an easy and effective way to detect any flaw in your PC. You can repeat the same for the keyboard, as well. You will be able to see the keys you are pressing right on your screen. You can test your trackpad using the mouse test tool on this site and see whether it displays your trackpad movement on the screen.

CPUX stress test interface

I also recommend testing your Fan Speed by putting your CPU under stress. Now there’s an online tool for this as well. Simply go to the CPUX site and start the CPU stress test with the default settings on the home screen. This will start the process and you can check if your laptop’s fan is working properly and whether your CPU can handle the stress.

After these, turn on Bluetooth, wifi, and all the ports by using them. Check if everything works fine and don’t have any issues with them.

9. Test Backlight Bleeding

If you have an IPS display then it is not rare to find backlight bleeding in them, even if your laptop is new. So, open the website called Lightbleedtest and click on “Click Here” to start the test. This will turn your screen black.

Light bleed test interface

Now turn off the lights of your room, and increase the PC’s brightness. If you notice a yellowish tint on the corners or edge of the screen then you can be sure that there is backlight bleeding in the screen. Claim a replacement if you see any.

10. Register On The Official Site

Now that everything is tested, it is time you register the laptop as yours. Simply Google searches your brand name with “warranty registration” and you would be able to find the warranty registration page. For example, if you own a Lenovo laptop, simply Google search “Lenovo warranty registration”. You will find the appropriate link to register your laptop.

Lenovo warrenty page

One thing you must note is that you must use the same email as you will be using for creating Microsoft Account (or the same which you have used to create). This will be easy to track and won’t confuse you while claiming a warranty in the future. On the site where you registered, you would be able to track everything, like the expiration date or your warranty, buy an extended warranty, download drivers, etc.

11. Login With Your Microsoft Account

You have to log in with your Microsoft account now. To do this, simply follow the below-mentioned steps.

Profile settings 1
  1. Go into the setting> Accounts> Your Info.
  2. There, click on ‘Sign in with a Microsoft account instead’
  3. This will redirect you to web browser
  4. Here og in with your primary email account.
  5. Once done, come back to setting app> Updater & Security> Activation
  6. You would be able to see in the activation section written “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft Account”.

12. Graphics And GPU Settings

There are some settings that I recommend you tweak before using to get optimum performance. Here are the steps you have to follow.

  1. Go to Settings App> System> Display
  2. In the Scale and Layout section, choose all the recommended settings.
  3. Now scroll down to find “Advanced display settings”, and click on it.
Advanced display settings

Check if everything is set perfectly and select the maximum possible refresh rate.

Next, If you have an Nvidia GPU, here are the steps you can follow to get the best performance from your GPU.

Nvidia control panel manage 3d Settings
  1. Right-click on the home screen, click on “Nvidia control panel”
  2. From the left menu, choose “manage 3d Settings”.
  3. In the preferred processor, choose “high-performance Nvidia processor”.
  4. Then in the “Adjust image settings with preview” section, select “Let the 3D application decide itself”. This will balance performance with battery life.
  5. Save the settings and close the Nvidia control panel.

13. Remove Bloatware

Next, you have to remove unnecessary applications which come preinstalled with the laptop. These are called bloatware. We don’t need these because we most often won’t be using these and they will consume unnecessary CPU and battery in the background. So, to remove these, search “Apps & features” in the windows search and open It to see the list of all the apps.

Apps and features uninstall drivers

Simply click on the app which you haven’t installed and you think which won’t be used and select “Uninstall”. Make sure you don’t install the Nvidia/AMD graphics updates as these will be on the list as well.

14. Install Necessary Software

Windows comes with many pre-installed software, and most of them are quite useful. But the thing is, most of them are either not free, or not powerful enough for most tasks. There are many free alternatives to such paid software.

Like, OnlyOffice, ShareX, and  Driver Booster are must-have software that you can use. And there are many such amazing software available for free.

15. Create Backup

The most important thing you need to do is to create a backup of your Windows 10. We have spent so much time setting everything up and if in the future we had to reinstall windows or reset it then you will have a backup so that everything will be intact. Restore point doesn’t cover everything so having a backup is a must. To do this, follow the below steps.

Backup and restore
  1. Connect any hard drive or pen drive with enough storage.
  2. Search “Backup Settings” in the Windows search
  3. Click on “Go to backup and restore (Windows 7)” and click on “manage space” in the popup.
  4. Select the external drive you connected and then click on “Next”
  5. Select “Let Windows Choose” and click on “Next”
  6. Click on the “Changer Schedule” link and turn off the backup schedule.
  7. Click on “Save settings and exit”
  8. Now click on “Backup now” and it will start the process of backup.

It may take a few hours, depending upon your hard drive’s speed and amount of data. Once done, plug out the hard drive and keep it in a safe place and you can use it to recover data.
