SMART: What Is This & How To Use For SSD/HDD?

Using HDD or SSD you must have come across people talking about SMART technology that is you get with your storage drives. Regardless of the regular user of the computer, I am sure most of you will be unaware of this technology. So, in this article, I will try to answer what is SMART technology for SSD and HDD, how to prevent data loss.

Introduction To SMART

The main and common problem with the storage drive, HDD, or SSD is that we have entirely no idea when they are going to fail, failing of storage drives cost us the very important data that we could have stored in another place and avoid losing it.

So, what if a hard drive could tell when it is to fail before actually failing. This way we could have enough time to back up our important data. This is where the SMART technology comes in.

What Is SMART?

SMART stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology and it is a monitoring system which is included in the hard drives that reports on the various attributes and tell us about our storage drive if they are working in a safe zone or they are on the verge of failing.

What You Can Do with SMART?

With smart technology you will be notified about the condition of your hard disk. This way you will be able to save your important document before your hard disk gives up.

How to Use SMART for SSD & SMART FOR HDD Using Software

Crystal Disk Info

To use this technology effectively you need a third-party software named “Crystal Disk Info” don’t worry we are not asking you to buy any software. it’s a freeware that means you can use it for free.

When you will open this software after installing you will find a lot of options and menus on the new window like Power on Hours which tells you how many hours your hard disk has worked, rotation rate in rpm, buffer size, features that tell us about the included technology in your hard disk, health status, and temperature.

Enable Run at Startup:

crystal disk info run at startup feature

To stay updated all the time allow this application to run on system startup this way if there is any problem with your storage drive you will be notified.

To do so- Go to the Function and click on Startup.

Apart from all the above, the most important one is the Health Status of your disk drive. If it states green means saying your hard drive is in Good Condition. If in any case if it is saying anything else bad or displaying any error then it’s time you start taking backup of your important data which you can do by using Glary Utilities Software.

View Status in Taskbar:

crystal disk info resident feature

To view everything, I mean the status of hard disk temperature and storage details from your taskbar. What you need to do is go to the Function menu and click on Resident. This will start showing an icon in your taskbar which will display the detail of your Storage drive.

How to Check Status of Drive Using CMD?

In case you don’t want to download this software and are wondering if there is any other way to check the status of my drive through it, yes there is.

wmic diskdrive get status

You can even view the status through your command prompt:

  • First, open your command prompt
  • Type “wmic diskdrive get status” then hit enter

This command will give you the status of the disk drive either stating it as good or bad. If the status is bad you know the drill, start taking backup of all your important data and be prepared for the replacement of your hard disk.

Why S.M.A.R.T Is Only Good for Storage Device?

Regardless of its effectiveness, there is always a question that this technology has to face is why it is just available for storage devices not for other storage components like RAM or Graphics cards.

And the answer to that question is that these other devices don’t store data permanently. If there is any failure from their side, we can immediately replace them without losing anything. That is why there is no need for any kind of monitoring technology in RAM or Graphics Card.

What to Do If S.M.A.R.T Shows BAD STATUS?

If in any of the above ways of checking the status of your hard drive you find anything other than GOOD or OK. The first thing you must do is backup all your important data to a separate drive. And be prepared for the replacement of the drive.

FAQs

How do I know if my HDD is SMART?

Almost all the modern storage devices whether HDD or SSD are coming with this technology. Still, if you want to find out that if your hard disk has the technology or not download the software Crystal Disk Info, when you run it you will see a Features section which informs you about all the different features your hard disk had come with, in that if your see it then it means your HDD is smart.

How do I enable my SMART hard drive?

SMART is enabled by default and some system provides an Enable or Disable option in their bios menu. But in most of the hard disks, this technology is enabled and disabled by default.

What is the SMART hard disk error?

SMART Hard Drive Error is also known as 301 error is an unexpected error message that indicates the failure of your hard disk drive (HDD) or the solid-state drive (SSD). You usually face it at the moment when you turn on your laptop or system. This error can mean two things that your storage drive is going to fail nearly soon or your device has already failed. If the former is the case, take the backup of all your data as soon as possible.
