There are mainly two reasons when people look for VPNs, first is if you are trying to access censored content on the web that is only available in other countries, and second, you are very much concerned about your privacy.
Here in this article, I am going to look into all the aspects of a VPN and provide you with an unbiased ProtonVPN Review so that it becomes easy for you to decide whether you should choose it or not.
What is ProtonVPN?
Not all VPN origin strongly involves Nuclear Physics Research Organization except one. ProtonVPN is a service provided by Proton Technologies AG, a swiss-based company that came into existence in 2014 when a team of scientists met at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) and developed ProtonMail, the world’s largest encrypted mail service.
The main idea behind building ProtonVPN was to protect activists and journalists all around the world. Due to its location in Geneva Switzerland, users using this VPN can benefit from some of the world’s strongest privacy laws, outside the 14-eye surveillance alliance and EU data laws.
The biggest strength of ProtonVPN apart from all the advanced security features is its very easy-to-use, intuitive, and attractive interface. Everything is placed so nicely that even a no-pc user can run it. The most important and basic features are placed on the home screen and other settings you find in the menu dropdown on the top left.
You can even zoom on the map to see the location of servers and connect directly by clicking on it. You can also create your profile with the desired settings and can even change the servers.
Free vs paid
|Connections||1 VPN Connection||2 VPN Connection||10 VPN Connection|
|Servers||In 3 Countries||In 43 Countries||In 55 Countries|
|Speed||Medium Speed||High Speed||Highest Speed|
|Strict no-logs policy||Yes||Yes||Yes|
|Access blocked content||No||Yes||Yes|
|Secure Core VPN||No||No||Yes|
|TOR over VPN||No||No||Yes|
|Streaming service support||No||No||Yes|
Secure Core: Secure Core in ProtonVPN is a Double VPN Feature that lets you connect through two VPNs before reaching its destination servers.
It affects the server speed as the connection is going from your device to VPN and then to another VPN and then finally reaches the destination server. But this does give you another layer of security as the first VPN server is always in a privacy-friendly location.
Split Tunneling: One of the most advanced features of ProtonVPN is split tunneling which lets you select whether you want to encrypt the whole connection or you want to exclude some of the apps. You can create tunnels in which one could go towards your ISP and the other will route your traffic towards the encrypted VPN.
This feature even allows you to exclude specific websites and is available only on Windows and Android.
Customizable Connection Profiles: One of the cool features that I came across while looking into ProtonVPN was the customizable profile settings. This feature lets you create a profile with desired privacy and security setting and let you connect with that anytime with one click.
Tor over VPN: One of the best-paid features of ProtonVPN is that it provides Tor features over the VPN features. If you are one of those who like to be anonymous while on the internet this feature is all for you.
Behind the scene, this feature will first route your connection through the Tor network and then to the VPN servers. Which will keep you anonymous during your online presence.
Alternate Routing: This is a built-in feature of ProtonVPN which lets you combat anti-censored content on the web. The app will keep trying alternate servers to reach the destination till it detects that your connection is subjected to censorship.
Kill Switch: One of the must-have features of any VPNs is the kill switch. It acts as a safeguard from your ISP if anyhow the VPN server’s connection is disrupted. The internet connection will be terminated if any network disturbance is detected on the VPN server connections. This way your activity will not be disclosed to your Internet Service Provider.
Ad Blocker NetShild: This feature of ProtonVPN works as an ad blocker that blocks all the blacklisted domains and trackers of all the phishing and malware websites. Which will keep you safe from the companies which spy on your online movement for their profit.
Streaming Services Support Netflix or Amazon prime: This is one of the most wanted features of VPN that they can stream content that is local to other countries. This is a paid feature of ProtonVPN Plus which lets you stream content on Netflix and Amazon prime which are only available in particular counties.
