At present, most of the people use their Android phones with just basic features and settings without exploring all things. If they get to know about the features and settings that lay hidden, they could personalize and customize their device in a lot better way.

Hidden Settings of Android Phone

Despite all the differences in software and hardware design among Android phones. The core experience is nearly the same as they’re all powered by Android. After all, and most have the same features, some of them are hidden.  So,  you just have to know where to look.

Here are 12 hidden settings of the Android Phone that I think every Android user must check out.

Hidden Settings of Android Phones

Over the years Android has gained so many hidden features that you aren’t aware of. These hidden features allow you to do tasks that may not be easily accessed.

It’s going to make everyday use of smartphones super easy and fast. Some solutions can help you improve your user experience with your Android device.

This is why I have compiled a list of Hidden Settings of Android Phones. Here we go:

1. Install App From Other Devices

You can download and install apps on your Android phones without being anywhere near it or touching it. If you have an Android phone, you can quickly and easily remotely install apps on your phone.

This method allows installing apps remotely on your Android device through the Google Play website. You can use the website on your computer or any other device, such as another Android phone.

install any app on playstore

This might be useful if you want to install something while your phone is with someone else or charging.  In order to use this, your phone must be logged in to your Google account and you have to use the same account for the Google Play website.

After that, browse through the Google Play store in order to find the app that you’re looking for. You can search for the app through the search text box and can also view the apps in categories. Once you find the app that you’re looking for, click on it to install.

Once you click Install, you’ll see a drop-down list of the devices associated with your Google account.

Install app from playstore

Simply select the phone or tablet you want to install the app on from this list, then press Install. After a few moments, your phone will begin installing the app.

That’s it, The app will now be installed on your phone if your device is connected to the internet. Also, if you’re not connected, it will start downloading as soon as you get the internet. This will save time and help to install apps without having access to your phone.

2. Scan for harmful apps

Your android phone is always vulnerable to viruses and malware from apps. So, to protect your Google Play store has built-in malware protection for Android.

It is known as Google Play Protect which continuously works to keep your device, data, and apps safe. It automatically scans your Android device and makes sure that you have the latest in mobile security, so you can rest easy.

Therefore, one can say that Google Play Protect is always running in the background and monitoring for threats. It performs the following tasks to maintain your safety:

  • It runs a safety check on apps from the Google Play Store before you download them.
  • It checks your device for harmful apps from other sources. These harmful apps are sometimes called malware.
  • It warns you about any detected potentially harmful apps found and allows you to remove those apps from your device.
  • It warns you about detected apps that violate the software policy by hiding important information.
  • It sends you privacy alerts about apps that can get user permissions to access your personal information, violating the Developer Policy.

If you like to install apps from unknown sources outside of the Google Play Store, turning on the “Improve harmful app detection” and “scan apps with play protect” setting will allow Google Play Protect to protect you from harmful apps. To enable this, do the following steps:

  • On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Store app.
  • Tap Menu Play Protect Settings.
  • Turn on Improve harmful app detection and scan apps with play protection.

Remember, This feature won’t remove the app from your device but will recommend that you remove the app yourself.

3. Screen Pinning

There are instances when you have to give your phone to your family and friends, but you only want them to access the currently open app rather than other apps due to privacy concerns.

So, in this case, you can easily pin the app that means they can’t open other apps.

Basically, Screen pinning is a feature of Android devices that enables the user to only show a specific app screen. This leads all other functions of the phone to get locked, apart from the one app that is pinned.

Even it is possible to pin YouTube or another streaming app,  meaning that all other functions of your phone are locked down.

To use the pin screen feature, you have to go to the settings and then select the security option.

After that, scroll below and choose the screen pinning option. In this, you have to enable the screen pinning that will keep the current screen to view.

You have to do these steps: settings >> security >> screen pinning >> enable screen pinning

After pinning your screen all the buttons like home and the recent tab will not work, only the back button will work.

In my opinion, this feature is very useful for all people. Also, this is incredibly handy for parents who give their phones to their children. So, I would say you must try these awesome features to enhance your privacy and security.

4. Data Saving Mode

As we all know that your mobile data use is costly and even considered to be saved where data plan costs are not affordable by all. So, we must have the ability to reduce data use or block it from apps altogether.

To achieve this, the Data Saver feature comes on your way that can be turned on or off by the user.

You will get the benefit as you will be able to control which apps can access data in the background and which can access data only while during the use. This ensures desired background data exchange when Data Saver is on by the user.

It’s been well known that almost all the apps on our phone perform certain background activities like updating, downloading the latest versions, and fixing bugs.

So, when you enable data saver it restricts their background activity. In short, you can stop these apps from using your data with the help of this feature as it restricts the usage of background app data.

You can easily monitor the usage of the data used by the apps on your android phone. By using the android feature you can see your smartphone data usage with dates and the amount of data every app had used since the last period

To activate the data saver feature data feature, go to Settings >> Data usage >> Data saver >>  Enable data saver.

When you will enable this feature on your phone notification will appear, if you will click on this notification then these hidden android features will be deactivated and you have to enable these hidden android features once again if you want to stop the background app data usage.

5. Blocking Unwanted Notifications

Depending on what notifications you want, you can change settings for certain apps or for your whole phone. Notifications show when you swipe down from the top of your screen.

Some notifications can also show on your lock screen and home screen. Sadly, some app’s notifications irritate as they spam you with promotional messages.

The obvious answer is to uninstall the offending software, but what if it’s an app or a game that you enjoy using? There must be another way, right? So, here are some easy steps which you can use to stop annoying notifications on the android phone.

You can follow this and get rid of those annoying notifications in just a few simple steps. To turn off any unwanted notifications :

  • Open your phone’s Settings app.
  • Tap Apps & notifications
  • Turn Allow notification dots on or off.

Simply follow the above instructions and free yourself from all types of annoying notifications.

app list

Each app has its own individual notification options, so tap the app you want to control, and then toggle it to the “on” position to restrict notifications. That completely disables all notifications for that particular app. Just repeat this on every app for which you want to turn off notifications.

Before you get in, remember that some notifications are important and necessary. Thus, I recommend you not to turn off all notifications.

6. Check which app use most RAM

The limited memory capacity of smartphones goes on stake due to more high-performance and graphics-intensive Android apps and games being launched. Also, there are ways to identify these RAM-intensive apps.

You can either disable the apps or even uninstall them to speed up your Android phone. This can further save precious battery life too.

Here is how to know which app is consuming more RAM and slow:

  • Go to Settings
  • Scroll down and tap Memory
  • The storage list will show you what content is consuming the maximum storage space on your phone. This list shows internal memory consumption only.
  • Tap on ‘Memory’ and then on the memory used by apps
RAM usage of apps in Android
  • This list will show you the ‘App Usage’ of RAM in four intervals which are 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, and 1 day. With this information, you will get to know all apps that are consuming what percentage of RAM.

So, this is how you check RAM usage in Android. On some Android smartphones, you will find a “Memory” item in Developer Options.

Again, you must first enable Developer Options, then open the menu from the very bottom of your Settings list or in Settings >> System >> Advanced. Once inside Developer Options, scroll down and choose “Memory.” Here you will see your phone’s current RAM usage.

To save up your RAM as well as battery, you can smartly reduce your phone’s RAM usage by uninstalling or disable the apps that you don’t actively use on a regular basis.

Moreover, if you don’t want to uninstall that app then you can also find a lite version of that app.

7. Magnification Tool

With this hidden android feature, you can magnify any portion of the screen and use the app normally. Magnification gesture is an Accessibility setting for Android which allows anyone and people like visually impaired users to zoom in and get the whole screen to have a closer look at screen content.

With this, users can triple-tap the screen to enter full-screen magnification and still interact with their device while zoomed in.

This feature will be of great use when you want to click on a very small button or want to read the small text.

With this feature, you can easily magnify what’s under your figure. You can drag your finger to explore different parts of the screen and to adjust the zoom level you can pinch two fingers or spread them apart.

To Magnify the android screen go to Settings > Accessibility > Magnification gesture > Turn on the magnification gesture.

enable magnification gesture in Android 1

Dragging two or more fingers across the screen while zoomed in allows you to pan across the screen. To adjust the zoom level, simply pinch two fingers together or move them.

The impressive factor is that magnification can range up to 8x. Also, If you open or close an app when zoomed in, you automatically zoom out. To zoom in again, use your magnification shortcut.

Remember, Available options may vary depending upon the device that you use. Overall, a very innovative feature that you must try.

8. Restrict Background data & Battery Usage

It’s been well known that almost all the apps on our phone perform certain background activities like updating, downloading the latest versions, and fixing bugs.

You can stop these apps from using your data with the help of this feature as it restricts the usage of background app data.

To enable the “Restrict apps background data feature”, follow these steps:

  • Open up Settings on your device
  • Then, Locate and tap Data usage
  • Search for an app you want to prevent using your data in the background
app list according to data usage in android
  • Select the app and then tap to enable Restrict background data.

That’s it. At this point, the app will no longer be able to make use of data when it is in the background.

Remember, you have to restrict the background data that means simply tap on background data which is allowing the app to work in the background.

I truly recommend you go through the listing of apps in the Data usage option and restrict background data usage for apps you don’t work with.

Also, Whenever an app runs in the background, it consumes some of the device’s limited resources, like RAM and especially the battery. These unnecessary processes tend to eat up your resources, preventing the battery to stand longer.

But, What if I tell you that you can limit these background processes or even kill them. I know you will be surprised but, that’s really true it is possible with the help developer option.

So, you can limit these apps from running in the background to save your data and battery.
