You might have seen videos on youtube about how to turn your mobile screen from 60hz to 90hz, or to 120hz. Well, is Game At 90FPS On 60HZ Display and 120FPS On 90HZ In Smartphone Possible Or Not even possible? What problems could you face if you try doing it?
Today, in this article, I am going to answer these questions and bust these theories about manipulating the refresh rates of your mobile device. So, without any further ado, let’s get straight to our topic.
What Is the Refresh Rate?
Before you proceed, you need to understand what the terms refresh rate and FPS actually mean. When it is mentioned that your phone’s screen is 60hz, it simply means that the screen on your phone can refresh 60 times in a second. Measured in Hertz (Hz), the refresh rate counts the number of times the display refreshes every second it is on.
What Is FPS?
As you might know, videos are basically a set of many images playing one after the other. Frame rate, then, is the speed at which those images are shown. It’s usually expressed as “frames per second,” or FPS. So, a 60fps video will have 60 frames (images) played in a second. The higher the FPS, the smoother it will seem in the eyes of the viewers.
Can You Play 90fps On A 60hz Display & 120fps On A 90hz Smartphone?
So, you have understood what FPS and Refresh Rates are. Now the question arises can you play high FPS games on a lower refresh rate screen? To answer this, let me take an example of a game called Alto’s Odyssey. This game can support up to 90fps. So, if you have a 60hz smartphone, let’s say Samsung Galaxy m51, and go on to the game’s settings to choose 90fps, you won’t be able to select that.
So, by default, a game can only select its FPS depending upon the smartphone it is installed in. A 90hz smartphone can support up to 90FPS games, a 60hz smartphone can support up to 60FPS games, and so on.
What If You Select 90fps On A 60hz Screen Or 120fps On A 90hz Screen?
It won’t be good for your smartphone if you select higher fps than your refresh rate. Even if you select higher FPS using some trick, you might face issues like screen tearing. So, if you want to avoid tearing, you should limit the FPS to what your smartphone can support or lower.
In PCs, there are a few ways you can fix the screen tearing issues though. AMD has V-Sync, Gsync, Freesync are the ways to do so. Gsync will not force the GPU to limit fps but rather increase the refresh rate of the monitor to adapt to increased fps. But you need a Gsync enabled monitor for that.
Smartphones don’t have anything as such. So, you should better stick with FPS according to your phone’s refresh rate to protect your smartphone’s health. Tweaking the FPS more than the smartphone’s refresh rate won’t be good for your phone in the long run.
Can you play 120fps on a 60hz monitor?
You mostly cannot play. But even if you find a way to do it, you might encounter issues like screen tearing.
Do 60fps and 120fps really make a difference?
Yes, you can clearly see the difference between 60fps and 120fps. High FPS does matter while playing games where you have to react instantly.
Can 60Hz run 90fps?
You mostly cannot run 90fps on a 60Hz screen.
