But what if your phone is not able to play a video file? And you see the error messages “can’t play his video on android”? What if the new movie you have just transferred to your phone just does not play?
Can’t Play This Video – Can’t Play This File
In this article, we will give you different solving alternatives to resolve the issue with videos not playing on your android device. And teach you how to fix “can’t play this video on android” errors.
Restart Your Phone
The issue with video playback on your phone could be occurring due to some issue with the functioning of the software of your phone.
The simplest way to get rid of these problems is by restarting your phone. As this will force your phone to start all of its software again which should resolve any problems in it if any.
And hence, solving the problem with the video playback.
Fix With MP4FIX Video Repair Tool
It is possible that the video isn’t playing on your phone because the issue is within the video. If this is the case, the simplest way of solving any issues with your video file is by using a third-party application to do it for you.
Using the following application, you will be able to repair the video files and make them playable.
Once the application has installed on your phone from the play store, you will have to open the application on your android phone. The application will ask you for permission to access the files in your phone, click on allow (this is so the app can view and repair the video files).
Inside the application, you will see a plus button on the bottom right corner. Click on the button and then select the corrupted video file.
Click on repair on the bottom right and then wait for the application to process the video. Once the processing is done, the application will give you the options to either preview or save the repaired video file.
The free version of this app allows you to only preview the restored video. You will need to buy the pro version of this app to save the repaired video file, but there is a way around this.
Before you preview the restored video file, run a screen recording application. Android phones come with a screen recorder that can be used by swiping through the notification tray.
If your phone does not have one, you can use the following screen recording application
Using the screen recorder, record the preview of the restored video. This way you will be able to recover the video file without any watermark from the app for free.
Add Extension If Not Present
The file extensions at the end of a files name are what helps the Operating System identify the different types of file formats.
And thus when a file does not have a file extension at the end of it, the phone is not able to run the required software (video playing software in this case) to run the file.
In such cases, all you need to do is follow the steps:
In the file manager of your phone locate the video file. Click on the rename file option.
Then, you will have to add .mp4 at the end of the file name and then save the file. (If cautioned about changing the file format, click okay).
VidTrim To Fix Can’t Play This Video
If the previous application (MP4FIX) did not resolve the issues with your corrupted video file, the following is an alternative application which might be able to solve the issues with your unplayable video file.
Install the following app from play store
Once the application has been installed, run the application and grant the required permissions for the application.
Select the corrupted video file using the file explored in the vidtrim application. And then click on Transcode below the video file.
Choose the required video quality based on the video quality of the original video. (selecting a higher video quality will not enhance the video quality of your repaired video file)
Once everything is selected, click on the go icon on the top right of the screen. You will be prompted to buy the full version of the application, click on continue to ignore it.
The video transcoding will start and soon you will have a repaired video file with you.
The drawback of using this application rather than mp4fix is that this application attaches a watermark on the repaired video file if you don’t have a paid version of the application.
Change File Extension
As we had tried earlier, changing or adding a file extension could solve the issue of video playback in your phone.
There are many more video formats instead of .mp4 and thus you can try and change the file extension on your video file.
To do so, go into the file manager in your android phone. Select the unplayable video file and choose to rename it.
Now, one by one try changing the file extension from .mp4 to .avi or .mov.
Wipe Cache Partition
Make sure to take backup before doing this.
One more potential way of solving the video playing issue in your android phone is by clearing the cache files in your android phone.
This clears any unwanted temporary files in your phone which could be causing the fault in video playback.
To clear the cache in your android phone, you will have to go into the Recovery mode of your android phone.
This can be done by first switching off your phone and then pressing the home button and the volume up button (the recovery mode button combination changes from phone to phone so try different button combinations if required)
Once in the recovery mode, you will find the wipe cache partition option. Using your volume keys to navigate through the menu go to this option and use the home button to confirm the selection.
After this, restart your phone and try playing the video file now. The problem should have been resolved by now.
VLC To Fix Can’t Play This Video
If the above two applications (MP4FIX and VIDTRIM) do not work for you, you can use the application VLC Media Player to solve the corrupted video file issues.
VLC Media Player is a very functional media playing app which also has the feature of fixing corrupted files. You can install the application
VLC Media player automatically fixes the issues with the corrupted video file and you don’t have to do anything about it.
Reset App Preferences
It is possible that you at some instance had changed the default playing application for the video files in your android phone.
When this happens, your phone tries running the video file with the application that you have made default and if the application does not support the video format, the video won’t play.
In this case, you will have to Go to the Settings of your phone and then go into All Applications. Inside here you will find the option to reset app preferences(This can be found in the three-dot menu).
Now the application selection for running the files will be back to default and the video files should now be playable.

To do so, you can transfer the video file into your PC through any method (USB transfer, drive, etc)
